Open-Source Voice Dictation Software Launched by VoIPster
VoIPster Launches the Linux Dictation Project for Accessible Voice Computing on Linux
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – June 2, 2025 – VoIPster Communications has launched the Linux Dictation Project, an open-source voice dictation and command interface built specifically for Linux users, with a strong focus on accessibility.
Designed as Accessibility Software
Andrew Mitchell, President and Senior Network Engineer of VoIPster Communications, introduced the project as a way to empower users—especially those with physical disabilities—to control their computers and enter text entirely through natural speech.
“As someone living with cerebral palsy, I’ve experienced firsthand the barriers that traditional computing interfaces present,” Mitchell said. “This project is about giving back and creating a reliable, fully customizable, offline-capable dictation system that respects user privacy and works natively on Linux.”
Built with Powerful Open-Source Voice Dictation
VoIPster built the tool using OpenAI’s Whisper for offline transcription. The system supports:
-
Full text dictation and command control modes
-
Voice-controlled editing and navigation
-
Modifier key support (Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Super)
-
System integration for always-on startup on Linux
Open-Source and Extensible
The team designed the Linux Dictation Project to be fully open source and community-driven. Available now on GitHub, the project invites developers, accessibility advocates, and users to contribute, submit feedback, and suggest new features.
