The reliability, stability, clarity, security and ease-of-use of the VoIPster Communications network is a founding bedrock principal. This a joint responsibility of every staff member, agent, contractor, contributor, individual and/or entity with which associate, without exception.
As part of that on-going commitment to network excellence, it is sometimes necessary to obtain data that helps our Technical Support and Network Engineering staff troubleshoot how our network and an end-user interact together. Standard troubleshooting practices commonly employ the use of two programs:
- IPERF/IPERF3: A commonly-used network testing tool that can create Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) data streams and measure the throughput of a network that is carrying them. Iperf is a tool for network performance measurement.
- MTR: Probes routers on the route path by limiting the number of hops individual packets may traverse, and listening to responses of their expiry. It will regularly repeat this process, usually once per second, and keep track of the response times of the hops along the path.
VoIPster Communications has testing servers at each of it’s primary datacenters:
- pt.kc.voipster.org (192.40.140.10) – Kansas City, Missouri
- pt.wi.voipster.org (192.40.141.8) – Jacksonville, Florida
iperf, iperf3 and mtr are usually common programs which can usually easily be installed from standard software repositories on Mac, UNIX and Linux based systems. Below we have included example syntax and output of each command executed against both Kansas City, Missouri and Jacksonville, Florida datacenters.
